It was a frustrating night for Everton U21s in the Trophy as they drew 2-2 away to Crewe Alexandra, despite leading twice on the night.

The home side then took the additional point, winning 5-4 on penalties, but the result still sees Everton advance through to the knockout stages.

Oumar Niasse struck twice at Gresty Road for the Toffees in either half but goals from Callum Ainley and Owen Dale were enough to see the Railwaymen keep their slim hopes of progressing through the group alive.

Everton manager David Unsworth declared himself “very proud” of his team’s performance.

“We came here tonight to get the result that would take us through to the next stage of the competition for the first time, so I am very proud of the lads for that.”

“I’m delighted for the players because they’ve had a couple of tough weeks, but they’ve bounced back and that’s what this group does.”
