The first four nominees for the Sports Personality of the Year 2019 have been announced.
Ben Stokes
England Cricket hero Ben Stokes is the favourite to take home the award.
Stokes helped England win the Cricket World Cup for the first time in the dramatic final super over victory over New Zealand. He would then go on to score 135 against Australia in the incredible one wicket third at Headingly.
Dina Asher-Smith
Dina Asher-Smith is the second person to be announced as a nominee after an incredible summer in Doha.
Asher-Smith became the first British woman to win a major global sprint title when she took 200m gold in a new national record time of 21.88 seconds. She also picked up silver medals in the 100m and 4 by 100m relay.
Raheem Sterling
England and Manchester City star Raheem Sterling was nominated for his part played in the Manchester clubs domestic treble. He was named the Football Writers’ Associations Footballer of the Year. His public stance against racism has been applauded nationwide.
Alun Wyn Jones
Captain of the Grand Slam Wales winning side Alun Wyn Jones was named Six Nations player of the tournament. Jones became his country’s most capped player when he participated in the Rugby World cup. In terms of overall international appearances he is second only to New Zealand’s Richie McCaw in total caps.
