Tommy Fleetwood will be aiming to go a step further and claim his first PGA Tour win when he competes in The Players Championship at Sawgrass later today.
The tournament which has been dubbed ‘golf’s fifth major’ was postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The purse for the Championship is the richest in golf, believed to be $15m in total and $2.7 for the winner alone.
The tournament itself starts with the first tee on Thursday morning at 11:45 GMT.
The Southport native Fleetwood will tee off at the later time of 18:44 GMT, alongside American duo James Hahn and Harold Varner II.
Fleetwood comes into the competition in decent form, having finished T10 shooting -3 par at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just four days ago.
The world number 21 has had strong finishes in Southeast Florida on the notoriously difficult TPC Sawgrass, finishing T7 in 2018 and T5 in 2019.
He is one of the only golfers in the field to be able to boast that stat as his game remains steady and consistent on a course known for volatility and toughness.
Despite his consistency on the course the bookmakers have his odds in and around the 35-1 range.
The 2019 Players Championship winner Rory McIlroy, The Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Bryson DeChambeu, alongside world number one Dustin Johnson all have shorter odds.
Moreover American duo Webb Simpson and Xander Schauffele have been tipped by many to make a splash at the tournament and will be sure to provide stout resistance to Fleetwood’s ambitions.
Notwithstanding a tough field and course, the 30 Year old clearly enjoys playing at The Players Championship and his back to back top 10 finishes puts him in a strong position to compete for that elusive first PGA Tour win.
