Tommy Fleetwood returned to action at the Valspar Championship in America over the weekend and finished tied 16th.

The Southport-born golfer hit a final round of 71, the highest of all his four rounds, to finish at 10-under-par overall.

The top 20 finish comes after a promising showing at The Players Championship, as Fleetwood looks ahead to the Masters in April.

Sam Burns claimed victory at the Copperhead course, near Tampa in Florida yesterday.

He  finished 17 under and then beat Davis Riley in a tense play-off to take the third PGA Tour victory of his career.

Fleetwood, who couldn’t match the American in the final round, had a good day on the greens but ultimately fell down with his tee shots, hitting just seven of 13 fairways.

The two-time US Open runner-up is currently ranked 47 on the World Tour and the weekend’s highlight came at the start of his round on Sunday.

He birdied the 560-yard par-5 opener after reaching the green in three then sinking from 11 feet.

Fleetwood will stay out in the States as he travels to Austin, Texas this week to take part in the Dell Technologies Match Play competition.

He will hope to return to form ahead of The Masters which begins April 7 at the famous Augusta National.
