After Liverpool’s victory in the Under 21’s Merseyside Derby, Merseysport Live looks at the top 5 players for the future.

  1. Tyler Morton

The Liverpool youngster has been at the club since the age of seven and signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in January 2021.

The youngster played a key role in their run to the FA Youth cup final with Morton netting 10 goals as the reds got beat 2-1 by Sean Verity’s under 18 Aston Villa side.

The reds young talent hails from the Wirral and has already made his professional debut in a Carabao Cup game against Norwich City, but his big break came in the Champion’s League tie against AC Milan, playing the full 90 minutes as the team from Merseyside won the tie 2-1.

Liverpool have let the 19-year-old go out on loan to Blackburn for this season. Morton has played seventeen times this registering one assist in an EFL Cup tie against Hartlepool.

 

  1. Ben Doak

The former Celtic player has been hailed as one of the next bright prospects after signing from the Glaswegian side for an undisclosed fee in the summer. The Scottish winger is only 16 years old and has already played for the under 23 side coming off the bench against Accrington Stanley scoring in added time in a 3-2 loss

Doak made his Celtic debut in January 2022 coming on as a substitute with 20 minutes to go during a 1-0 victory at Parkhead.

The youngster has also scored 3 goals in the UEFA Youth League with some impressive performances against top European sides such as Ajax, Rangers and Napoli.

He’s only been at Liverpool for three months, but top clubs around Europe including Arsenal, Bayern and Manchester City are already looking at snatching him up next year.

 

  1. Tyler Onyango

The 19-year-old England International was born in Luton, but signed for Everton at the age of eight.

The youngster played 56 times for the youth team scoring seven goals in total for the blue side of Merseyside.

Onyango made his senior debut in 2021 when he came off the bench in an FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday, he played a further three times that season coming off the bench in the premier league against sides Manchester City, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Burton Albion decided to take the youngster on loan for the rest of the 2022/23 season after he signed a new short term deal at Everton keeping him at the side until June 2025.

 

 4. Tom Cannon

Liverpool born Cannon is a Republic of Ireland International who has just signed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2025 just like Onyango.

He finished as the Everton Under 21’s top goal scorer last year in Premier League 2 with eight goals. This year after eight games the striker has five goals and two assists to his name.

The Irish international was nominated for the PL2 player of the month award after notching four goals in the first three games of the season, this persuaded Everton to give him the new deal until 2025.

In October 2020 he also won the goal of the month award for the senior side having scored a wonderful goal against Burnley. This season he was nominated for August goal of the month for his strike against Manchester United under 21’s.

5. Kaide Gordon

Gordon was signed by Liverpool in the January 2021 transfer window from Derby County for a fee rising to £3 million. He is regarded as one of the best youngsters in the Liverpool academy having already made his debut for the first team.

Born in Derby he made his debut in a Carabao cup fixture at the start of last season away at Norwich

Gordon became the reds youngest ever goal scorer in the FA Cup when he netted on his home debut in the third-round win over Shrewsbury Town in January 2022, and then started in the Carabao Cup semi-final win over Arsenal at the Emirates.

The England under 18 international has been absent from the Liverpool squad this year, apparently over fitness issues. The time frame of his return is still unknown.
