There’s no hiding from the fact Everton have had a poor start to the Premier League season, conceding 13 goals in the opening four games.

In two of these four, the Toffees found themselves 2-0 up against Bournemouth and Aston Villa however, they ended up losing both games 3-2, highlighting their poor defence.

During the opening four fixtures Everton played Brighton (h), Tottenham (a), Bournemouth (h) and Aston Villa (a). After these fixtures, the Blues had kept zero clean sheets, conceded 13 goals and faced 27 shots on target and were the worst in the league for these stats. They also had recorded the second highest expected goals against stat in the league, with 8.35.

In the most recent four games for Everton, however, they have turned this poor defensive record around. Sean Dyche’s men have only conceded two goals and have kept as many clean sheets, giving them the best record in the league for both during these games.

The Blues have also managed to more than half the shots on target they faced to 12, down from 27, which is again the best record in the league. This is all despite facing only one less shot in total, at 56. This means the defence are managing more blocks, or forcing shots from tougher positions.

As well as this, the Toffees have also managed to nearly half their expected goals against to 4.91 from 8.35, placing them in 6th in the league rankings for this stat.
