Southport made up for their midweek 3-0 defeat, in a five goal thriller, coming from behind twice to beat Scunthorpe United 3-2.

The visitors controlled the opening minutes creating the best chance on 20 minutes. Danny Whitehall’s close range header forced keeper Christopher Renshaw into a diving save.

Their pressure paid off in the 37th minute. Callum Robert fired home a spectacular free kick into the top right corner, from just outside the box. Southport keeper, Runshaw got close but not close enough.

Moments later, Runshaw had defender Sonny Hilton to thank for saving his blushes. Kian scales rounded the hapless keeper and raced into the clear, but quick thinking Hilton cleared off the line.

Just before half time the Sandgrounders were back in the game. Danny Lloyd left two Scunthorpe defenders in his wake and buried the ball into the bottom right corner.

Ten Minutes into the second half The Irons took the lead again. Bradley Nicholson’s long throw  floated into the box, Danny Whitehall rose above the defenders to head home.

Southport were back on level terms on the hour mark. Sonny Hilton latched onto Keenan Quansah’s through ball and fired home, through the keeper’s legs.

Less than a minute later, and straight from the kick off Southport took the the lead for the first time. Marcus Carver set up Lloyd to score his second of the game, from close range.

Scunthorpe pushed for an equaliser. Back to back corners and a flurry of close range chances failed to challenger the Yellows defence however as they managed to hold on for all three points.

Southport are just outside the play-off places on goal difference.
