Following a disappointing couple of weeks for Tranmere, defender Jordan Turnbull is looking to Saturday’s League Two game with Newport as “an opportunity to put things right.”
After losing to Crewe and getting knocked out of the FA Cup by National League Oldham, Rovers are looking to bounce back against their Welsh opponents at Prenton Park on Saturday.
Turnbull said: “We are on the wrong side of results and recent games have been on a knife edge, so ultimately we aren’t doing enough to win games of football whether defending or attacking. We need to do more to win them.”
Tranmere have won only one of their last nine league games ,something that the players want to put right.
Turnbull said: “We can’t afford to keep losing games of football, we are applying pressure to ourselves with the demands of this football club to pick up results and you can’t keep waiting and waiting. We need to start to pick up points now.”
Tranmere’s defence was their standout attribute earlier in the season but recent results have seen Rovers leak nine goals in their last five games.
The 30-year-old said: “We started the season really solid, and we need to get back to that. We have done lots of work in the recent weeks in defending in our shape and as a unit and ultimately, we need to score more goals as well.
“We are not a million miles away, but we need to do that extra bit in games to pick up points.”
Turnbull was optimistic despite the recent form and confident that Tranmere can get back on track and drag themselves away from 19th position in the table.
He said: “Everyone, fans included, had real optimism about the squad at the start of the season. The first few games we started really well, but since then we have fallen off and the only positive you can take out of that is that is it’s still early on and we can put it right.”
Rovers home form this season has been disappointing, but Turnbull wants to “make a statement” against Newport and get the fans back on side.
He added: “Fans play a massive part, and we are not giving them enough to shout about.
“We understand their frustrations and we really want to go out there and reward them and that starts on Saturday with picking up three points to gain momentum and get the crowd behind us again.”
