Two West Lancashire pools look set to remain open after councillors voted against the council’s recommendation to close them.

Nye Bevan Pool and Park Pool were initially earmarked for closure after West Lancashire Council said it would cost more than £1 million in the next year if they were to remain open.

The vote signified a defeat for Labour councillors as Conservatives, Independents and Our West Lancashire councillors won the vote in favour of an alternative plan.

This decision means that West Lancashire Council must hold an alternative budget meeting to re-adjust their plans.

The initial recommendation for closure was met with severe backlash from the local community, including from a local diving club based at Nye Bevan, who said the closure would effectively “close our club down”.

Peaceful protestors were present outside the council’s chambers with placards reading ‘save our pools’.
