A goal-filled second half saw relegation-threatened Tranmere Rovers secure an important 4-0 home win against Chesterfield, moving them to 21st in EFL League 2.

It was a game of two halves, with the teams being more or less equally matched for the first 45 minutes.

Both teams had a few chances, particularly towards the end of the half.

But they ultimately failed to get through the other’s defence, with both goalies making some good saves.

The second half saw Tranmere transformed, with Rovers playing with much more energy.

Less than two minutes in, Cameron Norman opened the scoring making it 1-0 for Tranmere and setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Regan Hendry extended Rovers’ lead less than 10 minutes later, benefiting from a strong attack by Omari Patrick.

Chris Merrie had the chance to grab a third in the 57th minute, but his shot was headed out by the Chesterfield defence.

The visitors started building their attack again towards the middle of the half, but ultimately failed to score.

In the 85th minute, Tranmere sealed the points through Josh Davison, who had come on for Kristian Dennis less than a minute earlier.

Sam Finley made it 4-0 for the Rovers-, capitalizing off of a ball that bounced off Chesterfield goalkeeper Ryan Boot after an initial shot on goal by Kieron Morris.

Tranmere interim manager Andy Crosby said: “In the first half Chesterfield were by far the dominant team.

“We regrouped at half-time, changed the formation, changed a few things tactically, and the turnaround is a credit to every one of the players on the pitch.

“We’ve beaten a really good team today and to score four goals at home and keep a clean sheet is really pleasing.”

On Davison’s quick goal, he added: “Today was a reward for him because he impacted the game as soon as he came on.

“We have to keep going, there are five games left and we haven’t achieved anything yet, we have to keep our foot on the gas.

“It’s important that we stay humble and that we keep looking at the reasons why we’ve won and we keep repeating them.

“We’re only collectively doing what we’ve done because of everyone, it’s not been down to one person or one player or the starting 11, it’s been down to every single member of staff and players and supporters.”
