On Sunday, Liverpool claimed their 20th league title with a win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

This is Liverpool’s second league title in five years, and it puts them level with Manchester United for the most league titles in England.

The atmosphere was building at Anfield from midday, and after the win, the celebrations carried through the evening.

Here’s a look at what Anfield looked like on that special Sunday afternoon.

13:38 – The atmosphere was building for three hours before kick-off. Fans had flares in supply and began singing the famous Anfield songs by the King Harry pub.

13:43 – Further up the Anfield Road, fans had made their way into position before the Liverpool bus would make its way to the ground. The bus wasn’t due to arrive until 14:50, but thousands already lined the streets.

13:57 – Fans were getting more and more excited as flares were being set off. The fans broke out into song. “We’re gonna win the league.”

14:27 – Flags made their way down the street towards the ground, as they were set to make Anfield as they wanted to make the Kop look like it was having another one of those famous nights.

15:00 – The Liverpool bus made its way onto the Anfield Road, and the fans gave the bus a league-winners welcome. The red flares blocked out the sun, and the smoky scent left a bad taste in the back of your throat.

15:04 – Some fans followed the bus into Anfield, while others made their way down to Rockfield Road as they headed towards the Kop. The fans were bouncing with excitement, knowing that in just three hours, Liverpool could become league champions for the 20th time.

15:14 – On the other side of the Kop, thousands of Liverpool fans were enjoying the sun at the top of Walton Breck Road. The red mist was still lingering in the air as fans sipped from a beer can or two.

15:57 – Fans were already beginning to pack the stadium. Each corner of the ground was a sea of red after Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk requested the fans to turn up covered in red.

16:23 – Flags, scarves and banners began to cover the Kop ahead of kick-off.

17:03 – After finding themselves 1-0 down in the 12th minute, Liverpool thought back and gave themselves a commanding lead. Goals from Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister put the Reds ahead, and a 34th-minute goal from Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool a healthy lead heading into the break.

17:53 – Liverpool took a 5-1 lead as Mohamed Salah and an own goal from Destiny Udogie put the league title within touching distance, and the fans began their celebrations.

18:25 – The final whistle goes and Liverpool win the Premier League for the second time in five years. Alisson breaks down in tears and is embraced by Wataru Endo and Andrew Robertson.

18:28 – The players make their way over to the Kop as they begin their title-winning celebrations. Scarves are swung over their heads, and flares light up the stand, as the Kopites drink in the special moment. Each player had their song sung before they made their way over to the fans.

18:56 – Liverpool= Champions. In what was an emotional Anfield for both the fans and the players, Liverpool had started the party, as the fans made their way out of the ground.

19:08 – Liverpool fans made their way out of the stadium and started to make their way to the front road outside of the Kop. Outside the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand, you could see fans sitting on top of food stalls and walls outside the Kop.

19:21 – Fans sat on top of the Paisley gates, looking over the gathering crowd at Anfield. There was little space to move through, as there were as many people outside the ground as there were inside the ground. People had made their way onto rooftops, setting off more red flares, as the sun shone down on the new league champions.
