A Birkenhead runner has won the 3,000m title at the recent NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Florida.

Ellen-Mary Kearney, 21, is currently studying Sports Science at Milligan University in Tennessee on an athletic scholarship.

The University will traditionally honour their winning athletes in their hometowns by purchasing billboard advertising, and it is believed to be the first time Milligan has done so on the Merseyside.

This display recently appeared at 208 and 222 Grange Road, Birkenhead.

Merseysportlive spoke to Ellen-Mary to find out more about her title win as well as her background in running and experience in America.

How did you get into running?

I’m the fifth youngest of six kids and grew up watching my elder siblings run and complete from a young age which made me want to run too. Around age 7/8 I started competing in the U9 age group and I’ve been racing ever since. My mum and dad coach the local running group and were my coaches from the age of 12-18, so running has always been a big part of my life.

How did it feel to win your first national title?

It felt very special, it’s one thing to think you can win but another to pull it off on the day. There were many points during the race when doubts started to creep in and the most important thing was to keep mentally strong and trust my body. When I crossed the line I was full of delight and disbelief, as well as relief as there had been a lot of people expecting me to take the win.

How has your experience been studying and competing in America?

Studying and competing in America has been really good fun. The money and support American universities have for sports is on another level compared to the UK. The training and competing side is hard work but it has opened up so many more opportunities and experiences I wouldn’t have got at home. I have one more year before I graduate and I feel it’s likely I will stay in Tennessee for a little longer, where I may try to pursue a role in coaching.

How did it feel to have your image displayed on the billboard in your hometown?

It was pretty cool and I’m so grateful for my university Milligan. They really value sports and love to celebrate their student athletes.

What does running mean to you?

Running is a way to test myself and push my limits. Training and competing is hard work but it’s always rewarding when you see the results. Outside of the competitive aspect, it has brought me so many friends and opportunities. It’s also a good way to help me structure my day and help me feel good in myself.
