Liverpool Homeless FC are hosting an event on Sunday June 29 to raise awareness on women against domestic abuse.
The event will be a women’s 5-a-side tournament and is free for anyone to enter.
Organiser Jess Lomax said: “We have been running it for 12 years now and it’s just about raising awareness for domestic abuse.”
In 2023, Liverpool had one of the highest crime cases involving violence against women.
Sara Mak, community and marketing officer at South Liverpool Domestic Abuse Services, said: “Last year we supported more than 1,300 women and girls who were experiencing domestic abuse in South Liverpool.
“We believe that this year will see a huge step change in the way that media report of men’s violence because domestic abuse is a national emergency.”

According to the Femicide Census, Merseyside is the worst region in the UK for femicide and 85% of all femicides in Merseyside are domestic abuse killings.
John Finnigan, CEO of Liverpool Homeless FC, added: “It’s about getting our women’s programs up and running and raise awareness about domestic abuse.
“We have had a few women in the domestic abuse tournaments who have actually fled and left their partners because of domestic abuse but that’s important for us.
“It is about raising awareness for women and to say that there is somewhere safe for you to go. You don’t have to put up with the abuse.
“So for us we are very small little club but we do have a grand scale. But if we can save one woman’s life then I think we have done our job.”
