Everton manager Brian Sorensen has said he is “excited for the future” after the Toffees tied against Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the WSL season, ending eighth in the table.
Veatriki Sarri gave the Blues an early lead with a free kick in the 11th minute, but Drew Spence got the equalizer for Spurs in the 30th minute.
Everton started the game strong and had multiple chances for more goals in the first half, including a header by Martina Fernandez in the 18th minute that hit the crossbar.
The second half saw no goals, but both sides continued to fight hard for chances but ultimately failed getting through each other’s defences.
“I’m frustrated that we didn’t take advantage, but credit to the girls for putting everything into the game trying to win it,” said Sorensen.
The Dane praised how his side adapted to the challenges of the season.
He said: “I said it to the girls yesterday in training, I’m so proud of how they acted, they kept to the plan, they have been working extremely hard and we turned it around from what we had to start with.”
The game saw Aurora Galli make her first return to the pitch after her ACL injury at the start of the season.
Sorensen said: “She’s been working so hard to get back, credit to her and the medical staff to do it that fast, it’s nice to have her back,” said Sorensen.
Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan made multiple good saves throughout the game, including a freekick by Olivia Holdt in the 43rd minute.
Sorensen said: “Courtney is always rock solid, she is so underrated, one of the best keepers in the league.”
On his plans for the future of the team, the manager said:
“We are just looking to strengthen the squad, I think the plan is to maybe lower the average age in the group a little so we have a better future in front of us, and until then just get really good players in from the highest level.
“We are doing really well in that part, so I’m very excited for the future.”
On the rumours of Everton Women potentially moving to Goodison Park in the next season he said:
“Let’s see what the ownership decides, but if we were to move there it would be amazing, so let’s wait and see.”
