Former Saints halfback Matty Smith has claimed the Women’s Super League coach of the year award.

He took the accolade on Tuesday at the Rugby League Awards at the Royal Armouries in Leeds after guiding his side to the top of the Women’s Super League.

In the men’s game, Hull KR had reason to celebrate ahead of Saturday’s Grand Final against Wigan.

Rovers reached their first ever Grand Final after narrowly defeating Warrington Wolves 10-8 in the play-off semi-final.

Wigan Warriors demolished Leigh Leopards 38-0 in their semi-final last Saturday.

The big award, The Steve Prescott Man of Steel, was awarded to Hull KR’s Mikey Lewis.

From being handed his debut aged just 18 back in 2019 by former Rovers head coach Tony Smith, Lewis has been a standout halfback with 19 tries in 26 appearances in the 2024 season.

A win in the Grand final on Saturday would cap off an excellent season fittingly for the 23- year-old.

 

Saints also had a runner up for a big award as prop George Delaney came second in Super League’s Player of the Year category.

 

The strong running Delaney, who was Saints’ Young Player of the Year for a second time, was runner up alongside Warrington’s NRL-bound Matty Nicholson.

Saints Women’s scrum half Faye Gaskin also a became a runner-up in the Woman of Steel category. York full-back Georgie Hetherington claimed the accolade following York’s Super League Grand final victory over Saints. As a result she becomes the third York player to win the award in consecutive years.

Meanwhile, other awards at the prestigious event included a clean sweep in the championship for Wakefield Trinity. Max Jowitt (Player of the Year), Oliver Pratt (Young Player of the Year) and Daryl Powell (Coach of the Year).

In the Super League Wigan Warriors’ Junior Nsemba won young Player of the year.

Rovers head coach Willie Peters claimed coach of the year.

In the Wheelchair Super League the Wheels of Steel went to Leeds Rhinos’ Josh Butler. Halifax Panthers secured a double as Rob Hawkins took the Young Player of the Year award and Wayne Boardman Coach of the year award.
