Everton finally opened their scoring account for the Women’s Super League season as a second half equaliser secured a draw against West Ham, writes Rita Casciello at Walton Hall Park.

After failing to score in their first three matches, the Toffees got on the scoreboard when Camila Saez diverted Melissa Lawley’s cross into her own goal to level the scores in the 72nd minute.

Anouk Denton netted the opener in style after 10 minutes, taking advantage of an incorrect pass by Megan Finnigan. This allowed Viviane Asseyi to assist the English midfielder, who found the top corner with a powerful shot to put the Hammers ahead.

Despite West Ham taking the early lead, Brian Sorensen’s side responded with several attempts from strikers Karoline Olesen and Katja Snoeijs just before half time.

Everton’s substitutions started to make an impression after the break and were fighting to take the game back level.

Veatriki Sarri made an impact by striking wide and it wasn’t a surprise that it was another substitute, Lawley, whose cross deflected off Saez and sailed over Kinga Szemik for the Toffee’s equaliser.

The leveller was just the beginning of Everton being so advanced in attacking, pushing for a winner, when Szemik denied Sarri again just before full time.

Altough Sorensen’s side performed better this afternoon, they still struggled to finish some impresive attacking play, which remains a recurring issue for the team this season.

The final whistle saw the visitors hang onto the draw, leaving both teams winless in the WSL this season, having earned only two points from their four league games.

Everton now travel to Leicester next Sunday before welcoming Chelsea to Goodison Park on November 3.
