Birkenhead Park RFC have struggled this season, and now it seems likely that they will suffer relegation from the Regional 1 North West.

The club have faced a series of setbacks, including two season-ending injuries in one game back in December.

The club even had to ask players who retired to come back and help due to injury issues.

Birkenhead Park manager, Billy Woof said although the injuries have affected them this season, it’s provided him with a lesson for next season.

He said: “This year we have realised that if next year we are able to come back up which we plan, we can build out two competitive squads which we’ve lacked a little bit.’’

With just four games left this season, Birkenhead Park want to end the season on a high.

In these final few games, Woof wants to see his team finish games strong.

He said: “It hasn’t all been bad. The games we have lost we have matched teams for 20 to 30 minutes.

“I’d like to see that go from 30 minutes to 50 minutes, stay in the game for 50 minutes. So when we do that we match the teams at this level.’’

The club suffered two big defeats at the beginning of the month with a 47-5 loss to Kendal and a 63-19 defeat to promotion-chasing Manchester.

However, in their most recent outing, Birkenhead Park came close in a 23-11 defeat to second-place Anselmians.

The team have experienced four defeats in a row, with their only two wins of the season coming at the beginning of 2025, as they beat Blackburn and Stoke on Trent.

Adam Wellington, club captain at Birkenhead Park said it’s been tough for the players, but they are still working together as a team.

“When you’re in a losing streak it’s hard to get players out of it.

“We try to make it as best as we can but at training, we try to introduce things to keep the players going and the old players are trying to push everyone through.’’

Birkenhead take on Stockport at home on the 1st of March, with it possibly being the game to confirm their relegation.

However, everyone at the club seems to have the same message. Finish the season strong, learn the lessons from a tough season and bounce back next season, as they look to return to the Regional 1 North West division.
