Cristiano Ronaldo reached another career milestone last night by scoring his 700th career goal against Ukraine.
This is the Portuguese player 95th goal for the national team, the most of any Portuguese player. He is chasing Ali Daei’s record 109 goals for the national team.
While Portugal lost 2-1 to Ukraine and failed to reach closer to qualifying for Euro 2020, the Portuguese captain had his piece of glory by reaching yet another career milestone.
Ronaldo’s 700th career goal was a penalty kick, after Taras Stepanenko handballed inside his own box. The Ukrainian received his second yellow card and was sent off. Then, the 34-year-old from Madeira scored Portugal’s only goal of the match in the 72nd minute.
Ukraine’s goals came in the first half. Roman Yaremchuk scored right at the beginning of the match, before Andriy Yarmolenko then scored Ukraine’s second and secured Ukraine’s lead.
This means that Ukraine qualifies first in Group B to the Euro 2020. Portugal and Serbia will fight for the second spot in the group. Portugal are currently in second with 14 points, Serbia third with 12.
