Neal Skupski and Jamie Murray lost in a three set battle in Rotterdam.
The all-British pair lost 5-7, 6-1, 10-6 against Jan-Lennard Struff and Henri Kontinen.
The 30-year-old Merseyside player and Murray, who teamed up with Jamie Murray last summer, just before Wimbledon, have yet to win their first title together.
The British pair won their first match in Rotterdam also in three sets, but were looking to go just a little further, after a semi-finals run in Montpellier, last week.
After Rotterdam, the British doubles team will continue to participate in these smaller tournaments, before heading to the United States to play the first two Masters 1000 of the season, in Indian Wells and Miami.
