Former Everton star Anthony Gordon has been called up to the England squad for two international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium – and Southgate needs to start him!
The Newcastle winger has been in terrific form this season, scoring nine goals in the Premier League and assisting five.
It would be heinous if Gordon was not given the opportunity to start at least one of the matches.
In three out of their last five fixtures, England have started Marcus Rashford as their Left winger.
However, the 26-year-old has struggled with his form this season.
Rashford has scored two fewer goals and assisted three fewer than Gordon in the Premier League this season.
The Manchester United forward’s work ethic has also been questionable at times this season.
Critics have often highlighted how he has waved his arms in anger and frustration at his team-mates.
Liverpool-born Gordon has created 10 big chances this season in the Premier League – four more than Rashford.
And there’s no doubt his teamwork as well as attacking play has been better.
England are known to play a 4-3-3 formation where the wingers are responsible for isolating opposition full backs and attacking in one-on-one situations.
So Gordon is perfect for England’s style of play as Newcastle United play the exact same shape.
The former Goodison favourite has also clocked the highest speed of any player this season (36.9km/h).
He was named European U21 “player of the tournament” and is regarded as one of the best dribblers in the league.
Gordon’s average carry distance is 13.6 metres which is the sixth longest in the league among wingers.
And the 23-year-old has hit 54 crosses this season – perfect ammunition for the likes of Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins.
On the other hand, Rashford has managed 24 fewer crosses which is not good enough if England are looking to provide effective supply.
Gordon’s 17 carries per 90 is bettered by only four players.
Moreover, eight of Gordon’s carries have led to a shot in which only seven players have registered more.
Two of Gordon’s carries have brought a goal – nobody in the league has achieved this feat this season.
So the stats prove it – Gordon has earned a starting place.
But it’s down to Southgate to be brave enough to try fresh blood rather than stick with the same old faces…
