Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United after a Maya Le Tissier screamer sealed the deal at Walton Hall Park.
The win means Marc Skinner’s side maintain their eiight-game unbeaten 2024/25 streak to top Group A in the Women’s Continental League Cup.
It was a 78th-minute half-volley from Manchester United captain Le Tissier that truly buried the hosts. A loose corner was headed away straight onto her chest, when she gave it one bounce before firing straight past Courtney Brosnan in goal.
For the first goal, it was Brosnan’s usually reliable hands that made the fatal error just 15 minutes. It came from an Anna Sandberg cross that fell into a crowded part of the box, and the Irish keeper failed to keep hold of it.
Whilst the French winger was denied credit for the opener, she had arguably the best real chance of the game to get her name on the scoresheet. Waves of pressure from the visitors culminated with the ball at her feet just six yards from goal, but she blazed over the bar, keeping the score to just the one for the time being.
But it was just 10 minutes later that her captain made amends, and they secured the three points.
Ultimately, this win for United means they’re unbeaten against the Merseysiders in their last 13 meetings, and they look firmly set to take the top spot in Group A.
3 Talking Points:
- Top of the group: the Red Devils have firmly established themselves as the team to beat in Group A after successive wins against Liverpool and their Merseyside rivals Everton.
- Le Tis screamer: A superb finish from the Red’s captain is certain to be a solid contender for goal of the season already.
- Emma Watson debut to remember: After joining from Rangers as a free agent in the summer, Watson put in a calm, collected masterclass today, helping her side dominate play for the majority of the fixture.
