Gaelic Football became a centre piece of the Irish culture on Merseyside.
Many Irish families moved across to England during the famine, but they certainly didn’t leave their traditions behind as they crossed the Irish sea.
For many Irish men, Gaelic wasn’t just a sport it was a tradition and a little slice of home life. Many used clubs, such as John Mitchel’s, and social activities associated with it to make friends and begin life in the new community.
