With Arsenal coming away from the City Ground with one point and Liverpool taking all three against Newcastle United, the Reds have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 13 points.

The travelling Gunners fans were left disappointed and rather bored as they watched their side all but surrender the Premier League title to leaders Liverpool with a 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who are more than familiar with dropping points against Forest, had a comfortable 2-0 win over Newcastle United who were missing talisman, Alexander Isak.

Liverpool took the lead early on through Dominik Szoboszlai before Alexis Mac Allister dispatched a second 20 or so minutes into the second half to calm the Anfield nerves.

Though Arsenal have a game in hand over Liverpool, it looks unlikely that the Gunners will be able to drag back the deficit in points and may have to give the Reds a Guard of Honour at Anfield when the two sides face off in May.

With Slot serving the first of a two-match ban, the match was overseen by ex-Everton defender John Heitinga. Heitinga was assistant manager at West Ham last season when the Hammers managed a top-half finish.

The Reds have a week-long break before their Champions League Round of 16 fixture against Paris Saint Germain, the longest break they’ve had since the beginning of the calendar year.

Speaking after the game, Dominik Szoboszlai said: “We are really happy that we are 13 points clear, but we will focus on ourselves.

“Now we have the Champions League. Game by game we are looking forward to stay on top.”

Liverpool will face PSG on the 5th of March as they look to book their place in the Champions League Quarter Final.
