As the 89th Master’s tournament tees off in Augusta National Golf Club, Merseyside’s own Tommy Fleetwood will be aiming for the prestigious green jacket.

Last time out at Augusta Fleetwood achieved third place, his highest finish to date.

Player’s Championship

Fleetwood recently finished T14 in the player’s Championship after a difficult first day.

He said: “I played really well, and I was happy with certain things because I didn’t feel like I played very well on Thursday, but I managed to do the right things Thursday night to be able to play well on Friday.

“I then played good enough to be close to the lead towards the end.

“There was a little bit of disappointment that I couldn’t quite push on and get closer but at the same time I felt like my game was in a good place.”

He battled against the adverse weather conditions in Florida.

He said: “The things that I worked on the things that- because it was very windy- and I think the things that threw my game off a little bit.

“You’re always learning but it’s making sure you’re more aware of those things and taking care of them quicker really and I had to work really hard on it during that tournament.”

Master’s Preview

The current world number 12 is hoping to achieve his first major success at Augusta.

He said: “I’d love to get myself into contention, do the right things and see how I feel and how well I can play finding myself up there on the Saturday and Sunday.

“And from there who knows.”

He was optimistic about his chances in the tournament and believes he can perform well.

He said: “Of course, every tournament you set out to win but there’s plenty that goes into that and focus far more on them and be in a good place.

“Hopefully come masters Sunday it will be another enjoyable experience.”

Fleetwood will be up against stiff competition with world number one and two, Scotty Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, both in good form.

Previously Fleetwood stated that he believes McIlroy is the best golfer of this generation.

He said: “I’ve always said it, I think for me definitely at the moment the amount, the length of time that he’s been up there, I feel like Rory is the best of our generation.”

Aims for the year

Aside from the Master’s Fleetwood will be involved in numerous other major tournaments, including the Open and the Ryder Cup.

Fleetwood aims to improve areas of his game in order to remain amongst the top golfers.

He said: “Have my game in a place where I feel like I can compete, where I feel like I can be up there in contention and then let everything else take over and walk through the door if that opens.

“Very excited about major season great golf courses very tough tests so it’s a constant fight to make sure you keep your game in play and be mentally and physically ready for those.

He aims to be a part of the prestigious Ryder Cup team in September and hopes to achieve success again with the team.

He said: “Of course, come September being part of that European Ryder Cup team is always a massive goal but again it’s one thing being on the team it’s another playing well and being part of a winning team is the ultimate goal.

“Lots to look forward to.”

John Rahm, 2023 Master’s winner, and Wyndham Clark, world number 11, are both in Fleetwood’s group.

He tees off in the Master’s on Thursday 10th April at 11:34pm GMT.
