Despite it being an “emotional and scary” goodbye, Lee Briers is set to leave Warrington Wolves after 24 years playing and coaching at the club.

The Wire have confirmed that Briers, his fellow assistant coach, Andrew Henderson and head of analysts Jack Phillips will leave with head coach Steve Price at the end of the 2021 season.

The former half-back believes it is time for a chapter in his career as Warrington prepare to bring in Castleford Tigers head coach, Daryl Powell.

“It is an emotional and scary time to be leaving after 25 years,

“But on reflection, this is the right time to go and experience something else which is quite exciting and scary at the same time.

“I wish Daryl Powell and the club all the best for 2022 onwards.”

Briers initially joined in 1997 from his hometown club, St Helens. He retired as a player in 2013 but still holds the clubs all time points record. Scoring 2,586 points in 425 appearances.

The Warrington Wolves Hall of Famer also helped bring the Challenge Cup back to Warrington for the first time in 35 years back in 2009, winning it twice more in 2010 and 2012.

The Englishmen leaves The Wire as a club legend and will be remembered for a lot of the success the team have had over the last two decades, whether playing or coaching.

“I’m extremely thankful to the club for the last 25 years.

“I’ve achieved some incredible things and have loved every minute of my time here.

“I’ve experienced everything – the highs, the lows and the in-betweens.

“I want to thank all the fans for taking me in back in 1997 as a young boy who’s now leaving as a man.”

However, the Brier legacy may be continued with his son Reece still playing for Warrington Wolves 18s.

The next chapter for the Briers is unknown but the love and respect between club and family is clear to see.

“We as a family have all taken to Warrington and my kids have both grown up to be big Warrington fans.”
