University of Liverpool women’s thoroughly dominated as they beat Liverpool John Moores in the Varsity Games Handball 31-11.
UoL opened the scoring almost immediately from the offset with Daniella Trimmis’ effort from the left hand side.
UoL quickly doubled their lead and LJMU had to chase the game following the opening moments.
Olivia Gonsalves pulled one back for LJMU after a wonderful give and go which was followed by a powerful strike into the top corner.
UoL continued to show their dominance as they went 6-1 up before 10 minutes had been played, with Julie Hansen bagging a brace.
Gonsalves again pulled one back for an LJMU side that was quickly fading out of the game, as UoL continued to extend their lead.
Hansen added a further three goals before the 20 minute mark as UoL led 12-2 and were in thorough control of the tie.
Shortly before halftime Gonsalves added a brace as LJMU slowly grew into the game, but UoL quickly scored again making it 14-5.
Trimmis scored UoL’s 15th goal of the game, and the visitors maintained a comfortable lead going into half time at 16-6.
A minute into the second half Hansen found the net again and shortly after UoL established a 12-point-lead via a penalty.
Gonsalves eventually scored again broke UoL’s scoring streak making the game 20-7 with just over 20 minutes to play.
Hansen continued to impress as she beat the keeper again to make it 24-7 in the 47th minute.
UoL closed out the game in the explosive fashion they begun in as they exceeded 30 points in the final minutes of the game.
UoL star of the show Hansen said: “It was fun playing, I feel like we worked really well together as a team driving well with the ball and it made good space for me to shoot.
“I think we will do very well, there is great spirit with the girls, we are really into it so I think we will be great.”
LJMU Handball Club President, Anna Durrance said: “I’m so proud of the way that we played, this team has come so far in the last three years.
“The girls have just been to Kent for a tournament and come 7th but the last five years the women’s handball team at JMU has come 12th.
“The girls gave it everything, left everything out there, could not have asked for more, we’re gonna come back stronger than ever next year.”
