Liverpool will be aiming to claim another huge three points in the Premier League title race when they welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
It will be the first time the two clubs have met since last summer’s Champions League final in which Liverpool beat Spurs 2-0 to secure their sixth European Cup. Since then both sides have gone in opposite directions with Liverpool top of the League six points clear, whereas Spurs find themselves thirteen points behind Liverpool in 7th.
Ahead of the game at Anfield Joel Matip is the only doubt for Liverpool with the Cameroonian still suffering from a knee problem. Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to return after missing the mid-week win over Genk with midfield duo Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum expected to the starting eleven. As for the visitors only Hugo Lloris is set to miss the match after dislocating his elbow against Brighton.
The Reds can boast an impressive recent record against their visitors from North London having only lost one of their last thirteen Premier League meeting (W8, D4, L1). Spurs have also not won away to Liverpool in the league since May 2011, a 2-0 win which came courtesy of goals from Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart. Liverpool’s form at home in the Premier League has been incredible also. They have won their last eleven Premier League games at Anfield and haven’t lost at home since a defeat against Crystal Palace back in April 2017.
Despite Liverpool’s excellent record against Spurs Reds, manager Jurgen Klopp insists they will have full respect for Sunday’s opponents. He told Sky Sports “We will not be that confident that absolutely nothing can happen to us and they will not… I don’t know how many points they have but they will not play like a team with the point’s tally they have. They are a top side in the Premier League and they will be a top side the whole season in the Premier League. We have to respect that and play the best football we can play.”
Tottenham will be hoping that their mid-week win over Red Star Belgrade can ignite what has been a poor start to their season, which includes a humbling 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich. Spurs have not won away in the Premier League all season, a record that under scrutiny boss Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to fix.
Liverpool vs Tottenham will kick off at 4:30pm and will be available to watch on Sky Sports.
