Caldy RFC hope to disrupt Coventry’s title aspirations on Saturday as they fend off threat of relegation.
In the dynamic landscape of Championship rugby, where margins are fine and every point can be decisive, we find ourselves at a crucial juncture where the highs and lows of the league table clash.
The hosts Caldy RFC, who languish dangerously low in the table, will be hoping to upset the odds and create some distance between themselves and relegation. In stark contrast, with the opportunity to take top spot if results go their way, Coventry RFC look to make it five wins from six after a narrow defeat last week.

Caldy, despite home advantage, categorically go into this fixture as the underdogs. The Ravers, fresh off the back of promotion from League 1, would have hoped for a better start to life in the second tier.
They find themselves sitting in ninth out of the 11 teams in the league after niine games played. The Wirral-based club found themselves in good form going into Christmas with back-to-back wins against Ampthill and Doncaster Knights, however they have since lost three games on the bounce.
Conversely, Coventry have been flying. From their opening 10 fixtures, they have achieved 6 wins earning them a third-place position. Undoubtedly the favourites on paper, a win at Paton combined with a fortuitous set of results in the concurrent games, could see The Cov leapfrog second place Cornish Pirates, and draw level on points with league leaders Ealing Trailfinders.

Two key players that spectators should pay close attention to in this fixture are Caldy’s Australian hooker Ollie Hearn, and Coventry’s fly-half, Patrick Pellegrini.
Hearn, 31, formerly of Newcastle Uni, Anselmians, and Manly Marlin’s has been instrumental in keeping Caldy afloat this season, with five successful tries amassing 25 points scored. A big performance from him will be paramount to Caldy’s chances of walking away with anything.
Coventry’s fly-half is a Tongan international by the name of Patrick Pellegrini. Whilst he doesn’t lead Cov for tries, he has achieved an incredible 84 total points scored. He is currently the league’s second-top point-scorer, just two behind Hartpury RFC’s Harry Bazalgette.
The sides will meet at Paton Field, Thurstaston for a scheduled 2:00pm kick-off on Saturday (February 3).
Tickets for the match can be purchased online via the Caldy Rugby Club Website.
