A sell-out crowd will witness the first woman’s Merseyside derby to be played at Anfield when Everton travel to bottom of the league Liverpool.
The Reds will be hoping that playing at the famous stadium will motivate them to their first victory of the season having only taken a point from their opening five league games and losing their last three. The Toffees however have made a good start to the season sitting 5th in the league and just four points off leaders Chelsea.
However Everton have not beaten Liverpool away from home since a 2-1 victory in August 2012, a run which they will be desperate to end in particular because they will be playing in front of a packed Anfield, they will be looking to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat against Manchester United too in order to maintain a possible title push.
It will also be a big game for under fire Reds boss Vick Jepson who knows that a defeat on Sunday could spell the end of her 54 weeks in charge. She has only achieved seven wins in all competitions since her appointment.
The Reds are also struggling with one or two injuries coming into the game. Everton on the other hand have been dealt a huge blow with the league’s top scorer Chloe Kelly serving a suspension following her sending off in the last match.
In terms of players to keep an eye on Liverpool’s Rhiannon “Razza” Roberts could be vital to getting a good result. The defender could be the difference when it comes to dealing with Everton’s talented forward line. As for the Blues their captain Lucy Graham has been one of their standout performers with a number of impressive midfield displays.
Whatever happens during the 90 minutes, it will be a huge afternoon for woman’s football on Merseyside. Speaking to BBC sport Jepson emphasised the importance of the fans support. “It’s important that if you support Liverpool you get down and support the women’s team, it should be exciting for the fans given we have a big Liverpool family, there is still a long way to go just like any women’s team but we are certainly moving in the right direction.”
