Walking football has been on the rise since its creation in 2011 and Merseyside has become a hotspot for the game.

With over 1000 different clubs in England there is a vast array of opportunities to get involved.

It has been a pillar of stability for the older generations bringing fitness and social well-being especially after the global pandemic in 2020 which has seen the sport grow and become a vital part of local communities.

The sport was once considered a bit of joke but the continued success and wider focus on it has revealed the real impact it has on the lives of those who play in the region.

Merseyside has an array of walking football clubs. Southport FC Walking Football and St Helens Walking Football club are prime examples of the community and competitive elements of the game.

Steve Thompson is from Southport FC walking football, the St Helens Walking Football club’s CEO is Peter Fitzpatrick.
