Merseyside’s Tony Martin was back to his best this weekend as he won the Darts Italian Open.
Soft tip team GB captain overcome some tough opposition in order to lift the title.
The semi-final was the notable tie of the day, with Tony facing close friend and in-form Michael Warburton. Tony was unplayable with a phenomenal 5-1 win with a 102 average.
Tony then faced another friend in soft tip pairs partner Thibault Tricole in the final.
The averages did not match the height of his semi-final but nevertheless another dominant performance. The game was nip and tuck early on leading to a score line of 2-2 Tony then stepped up in class. A 112 finish from the Ellesmere Port man was the turning point. He dominated from there and eventually went on to win 6-2.
Tony spoke to merseysportlive after this tournament in high spirits.
He said: “I’m very happy to have won the Italian open which finishes the 2019 BDO calendar.”
He admitted that it’s been a tough year for himself, saying, “it has been an up and down year for myself.”
He said the highlight of the weekend was beating friend Michael Warburton who he describes a “the inform player in the BDO at the moment.”
Tony has reached the heights of his career in the soft tip form of the game where he is one of the worlds elites. There has been stints of success in the BDO. It has been almost 14 years since Tony last qualified for the BDO world championships where he lost to PDC star Simon Whitlock.
With the new season on the BDO looming Tony will be hoping to recreate the scenes of 14 years ago.
“Lets see what 2020 brings in the BDO for all that play in it and myself personally.”
