Liverpool will look to take a step closer to securing promotion back to the Women’s Super League when they host Sunderland Ladies at Prenton Park on Sunday.

Matt Beard’s side head into this weekend’s game nine points clear of 2nd place Charlton in the Women’s Championship.

The Reds last won silverware in 2014 and were classed as the greatest women’s team in the country after winning back-to-back super league titles.

After relegation in 2020, Liverpool narrowly missed out on promotion last year but look certain to return to the Super League next season.

Impressive Form

Manager Matt Beard was named Manager of the Month this week after an impressive January.

His side win four of their five games, scoring 17 goals, and only conceding one.

Beard impressed with his side

Beard praised his team after collecting the award: “it recognises the fine start made to the season from the team.

“Anything we achieve is down to a collective effort, so this award is for the whole playing squad and staff.”

Liverpool head into Sunday’s game with Sunderland on the back of another impressive 3-0 win against Coventry last weekend.

A goal of the season contender from defender Taylor Hinds and a Leanne Kiernan double which brought her tally for the season to 13, ensured the points for Liverpool.

The Reds will look to Kiernan again for the goals this weekend before the Irish international and her teammates separate for the international break.

Missy Bo Kearns and new signing Katie Stengel have also been in fine form in recent weeks and will provide a threat for the reds.

Up to ten players will feature for their national teams next week before returning for the huge FA Cup tie against Super League leaders Arsenal.

Sunderland head into Sunday’s game with Liverpool in poor form having lost four of their last five league games and currently sit 9th in the table.
