Litherland-born striker, Paul Mullin, has caused a stir on social media releasing photos of a pair of custom-made football boots with an expletive loaded message to the Conservative government.
Mullin has been Wrexham AFC’s star player this season, scoring 11 league goals in 15 games, but it is off the pitch where he made headlines this week.
The 27-year-old took to twitter ahead of the Red Dragon’s home match against FC Halifax Town to post pictures of his boots with a message that read ‘F*** the Tories!’ on one boot and ‘This Place’ on the other with the skyline of Liverpool. The latter message is a tribute to Scouse singer and Liverpool FC fan Jamie Webster.

The Vanarama National League North club released a statement about the ex-Liverpool Academy and Tranmere player stating: “The Club can confirm that the boots revealed by Paul Mullin on social media will not be worn tonight, or in any other Wrexham AFC fixture, and that the photographs taken at the Racecourse Ground were done so without our knowledge or approval.”
The club announced that it held a neutral position on political matters, stating that all employees and fans are entitled to their own views and opinions, but these do not represent the thoughts of everyone at the club or the club itself.
The Liverpool-born striker’s actions received a buzz of reaction online with hundreds of people believing he should have been allowed to wear the boots. Plenty took to twitter to support Mullin tweeting comments such as ‘he’s spot on, huge respect’ and ‘what a man Paul Mullin is’.
Graham Ruthven, who features on ‘Total Soccer Show’, one of The Athletic’s podcasts tweeted: ‘Ok, now I get why Wrexham fans love Paul Mullin.’
Another fan stated: ‘Who’s gonna tell Wrexham that making a statement banning Paul Mullin from wearing the boots is making a political statement in itself.’
Wrexham concluded their statement with: “After this unwelcome distraction, the Club hopes the focus remains on our objectives of gaining promotion on the field and creating community benefit off it, in which Paul Mullin will continue to play a significant part.”
You know what Paul Mullin, you and your left hand have been forgiven for 'that' goal in the play offs. Lovely boots them la https://t.co/UvHz0iudDb
