Before a ball had been kicked in Qatar, the 2022 World Cup had been front and centre of news headlines.
Many team captains had expressed their intention to wear the One Love armband as a public display of support for the LGBTQ+ community in light of same sex relationships being outlawed in Qatar.
Following FIFA and Qatari disapproval the plans were scrapped, with FIFA warning anyone who wore the armband would face an instant yellow card.
Many are outraged by this decision, believing players should have the right to show their support forthe LGBTQ+ community.
In addition, the World Cup has attracted further negative attention due to other humans rights issues including the alleged deaths of migrant workers who helped build stadia and the country’s infrastructure in preparation for the tournament.
All of this has led to many football fans boycotting the World Cup in protest. Watch our video below to see what the people of Liverpool have to say about Qatar 2022.
