Liverpool are aiming to end Manchester City’s unbeaten run in Sunday’s Women’s Super League clash at Anfield.

Matt Beard’s side face a daunting challenge against league leaders City who’s 2-0 win against current champions Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday, continues their six game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

With Gareth Taylor’s side sitting top of the table in the Barclays WSL, the fifth place Reds have a big challenge on their hands to cause an upset.

City turned heads in their UCL opening group stage game midweek, with Naomi Layzell and Khadija Shaw both scoring past Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll.

For Liverpool, last weekend’s league game against Tottenham Hotspur saw some late drama, with Hӧbinger scoring a penalty to win the game 3-2 in extra time.

After going off injured against Spurs, it has been confirmed Sofie Lundgaard will miss Sunday’s game with an ACL injury. The midfielder signed a new contract with the club last month, but it is unclear how long she will be out.

This will be the 26th game between the two teams, with Man City winning 19 of those meetings and the Reds only winning four. The last win for Liverpool came at the end of last season with a 2-1 victory in the WSL at Prenton Park.

History shows it will be a tough game for Liverpool, but City’s current run of good form is matched by the Reds who are yet to lose a game in the WSL this season with their last loss coming against Manchester United in the League Cup. City’s last defeat came at the start of September against Paris Saint Germain in the Perth International Football Cup.

Sunday’s game is the first of three Barclays Women’s Super League fixtures to be held at Anfield this season. The club announced in May that these games would take place at the Merseyside fortress to increase supporter numbers for the women’s side.

The other games at Anfield will be Manchester United in March and Everton in May. The club will be hoping for a big turnout of support for the women’s side, especially with teams like Arsenal women selling out the Emirates in the league last season.
