Tranmere got a much needed and well-deserved 2-1 win over Newport County at Prenton Park.

Conor Jennings once again proved how important he is to Nigel Adkins’ side as he netted the opener just before half time before Kieron Morris doubled the lead 15 minutes after the break to put Tranmere in a comfortable position.

Newport got a late goal through striker Kyle Hudlin to make it a nervy final few moments for the Rovers fans after a dominant second half display for the home side.

Former Rovers player Kyle Jameson saw red in the 90th minute for his second bookable offence after substitute Josh Davison made a great run down the right-wing, drawing contact and making the Exiles end with 10 men.

Tranmere hadn’t won a home league game since they beat Walsall 1-0 on August 24, a run which has seen pressure start to build on Adkins with the fanbase disappointed at the start to the season.

Newport started the game well, controlling the ball and thought they had opened the scoring in the fourth minute as centre half Kyle Jameson headed in from a set piece, but the flag was raised for offside.

The visitors started to dominate the ball but struggled to create any meaningful chances to threaten Luke McGee in the Tranmere goal.

Rovers responded with a flurry of their own set pieces with two of them ending with Jennings heading over as they wasted good opportunities to take the lead.

He eventually made up for his misses in the 41st minute as Connor Wood played a somewhat hopeful ball over the Newport backline which Jennings ran onto before taking his time to cooly slot past Nick Townsend to take a deserved lead into the break.

Jennings has now scored a goal in each of the last three games and is quickly proving to be Tranmere’s main threat going forward.

The second half started how the first had ended with Tranmere all over Newport. They eventually doubled their lead in the 58th minute thanks to Morris who couldn’t miss from the rebound after a great save by Townsend to deny Luke Norris.

Newport had a bright spell around the 70th minute mark with McGee having to make a great diving stop to deny Hudlin’s effort from range finding the bottom right-hand corner.

Omari Patrick almost rounded the day off with an incredible run from his own half, only to be denied as his shot cannoned off the bar.

Newport got their goal through a wide free kick in the 84th minute where 6ft 9 inch Hudlin rose the highest to meet the delivery and head past McGee to put the pressure on Tranmere who had been resolute up until that point.

Tranmere will be annoyed that next weekend’s fixture at home to Fleetwood has been called off due to international call ups so they will have to wait until November 22 away to Cheltenham to back up this display.
