Nigel Adkins has called on fans to get behind the players as Tranmere host Harrogate Town this weekend.

Rovers are winless in their last five games in all competitions with their last league victory coming against Newport County last month. They sit just above the relegation zone in 21st place, a position that has led to unrest among sections of the club’s fan base.

Adkins said: “Come and support our club, we’ve got to create an energetic atmosphere around the stadium on Saturday to get behind the players and support them, because we want them to express themselves.

“We all need each other. We’re hurting at the moment because it’s not going the way we want.”

The club’s form has been concerning for fans with the Birkenhead born manager admitting the pressure is on himself to turn Tranmere’s season around and get the fans back on side.

He said: “You find out about yourself and I share the frustrations.

“Listen, we need to win a game of football, the pressure is on me and I thrive off that because if you want to be involved in the game there are going to be pressures.”

Adkins is not the only one at the club under scrutiny. Mark and Nicola Palios have owned the club since 2014 but threatened fan protests have put the spotlight on the boardroom.

Adkins: “It’s been perfectly clear that Mark and Nicola Palios are trying to move the club in a positive direction, they’ve been brilliant for the football club for several years now.

“There has been a lot of talk behind the scenes which everyone is frustrated at. We’ve just got to trust and let Mark and Nicola get on with it.

“On the horizon, something is going to happen in the future but at this moment in time what we can do is help our team win the next game of football and that starts on Saturday.”

With only two places and three points separating the two sides, Adkins expects a tough contest with relegation rivals Harrogate. A victory for Tranmere could see them leapfrog their opponents on goal difference.

He said: “A lot of our focus will be on ourselves rather than what they are doing.

“From our point of view, we’ve got to go out there on Saturday and give everything for Tranmere Rovers.”
