The Liverpool captain announces her retirement from professional football at the end of the season.
Niamh Fahey, 37, will play her final home game on Sunday 4th May, at Anfield against Everton.
The lifelong red came to the club in 2018 and has made 123 appearances in the Women’s Super League.
The centre-back became the Liverpool captain in 2020 and went on to captain the reds 70 times in her career.
She has had numerous successes in her playing career, including lifting the FA Women’s Championship title in 2022 to bring Liverpool women back into the WSL.
Fahey retired from international football in January 2025 after 115 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, making her the 5th most capped women’s player
Fahey said in her farewell message: “All I can say is how fortunate I feel for the career i’ve had and being able to finish it all off at my girlhood club Liverpool FC.
“I’m so grateful for all the wonderful people I’ve met, shared a dressing room with and to those who have supported me throughout it all. There are too many people to thank individually, but I think you will all know who you are!
“My time at Liverpool has been a rollercoaster for sure! From some real lows to some unforgettable highs.
“Ultimately, I feel so proud of the last seven years, the journey we’ve been on and for me personally being able to pull on the red shirt, captain the team and wear the Liver Bird on my chest. I have never taken it for granted and it has been a dream to play for this club.”
She thanked their fans for their endless support while she wore the red shirt.
She said: “To the fans, you have been the life force behind everything, especially helping to bring the club back to a competitive place in the WSL.
“I can’t thank you all enough for the unwavering support, in good times and bad and the memories we’ve shared along the way. It’s been unforgettable.”
Amber Whiteley, interim head coach commended Fahey for her leadership and commitment to the team.
She said: “As our captain, Niamh has been an incredible leader in every way. She has always led by example and with her heart well and truly on her sleeve.
“I’m not sure she will ever know just how much she is loved and respected by everyone here. We are going to miss her!
“On behalf of the staff and players, I would like to thank Niamh for everything she has contributed to Liverpool Football Club and for being everything you could ever want in a captain.”
She becomes the second Irish international to retire this week after Louise Quinn announced her retirement from professional football earlier in the week.
Niamh Fahey will finish her career in LFC Women’s final match of the season against Chelsea on Saturday 10th May.
