Jamie Carragher is worried about Liverpool’s transfer business this summer as he fears the Reds may miss out on key targets if their current slump continues.
After only signing Cody Gakpo in January, the Anfield outfit still look vulnerable in midfield, an area which has been considered the ”engine room” during Jurgen Klopp’s reign. With the current crop of players looking tired, the management team have made England international Jude Bellingham their number one target this summer.
But signing the highly rated Borussia Dortmund midfielder will not be easy if Klopp’s men continue their poor form. With zero wins so far in 2023 that has left Liverpool in tenth place, 11 points off Newcastle in fourth, the main aim for the Reds now is trying to get into the top four to guarantee Champions League football next season.
But with no certainty of playing in Europe’s top competition next year, Carragher has expressed concern about the incomings this summer, especially the speculated arrival of Bellingham.
Carragher said: “I’m worried when Liverpool play, I wonder if they will even win a game at the moment. If we finish where we are now in the league, with no Champions League, I worry that Jude Bellingham and other quality midfielders won’t want to come.”
Speaking to Kelly Cates and Josh Denzel at The Overlap on Tour show at the M&S Arena, Carragher also explained why he felt the club didn’t strengthen last summer, saying: “We were two games away from winning four trophies last season.
“For someone to come in they had to be special. Tchouaméni obviously went to Real Madrid and Dortmund weren’t going to let go of Haaland and Bellingham in the same season.
“This led to the club thinking they could squeeze another year out of the midfield, which clearly they got very wrong.”
With a top four finish a big ask but still a possibility, Liverpool will be hoping for a good run of form to finish the season and win the race for the Champions League spots and Bellingham’s signature.
