Chester FC are looking to rise further up the table as they host top of the league, Scunthorpe United, at the Deva Stadium this Saturday (October 18).

The Seals are looking to bounce back after failing to qualify for the first-round proper of the FA Cup last weekend. Before that, Calum McIntyre’s side hadn’t lost in their eight previous games.

The hosts will be calling on significant support from the terraces as the away side come into the National League North game after losing just one game all season. The Iron are leading the way in the table with a game in hand over Chorley in second.

The Harry McNally Terrace has already sold out and Scunthorpe have almost sold out their 500-ticket allocation.

Chester’s general manager, Albert Davies told Mersey Sport Live, “We have been blessed with a very loyal and passionate fanbase. These kind of games with big away followings always encourage our fans to come down.”

Davies is excited at the prospect of a top of the table clash. He said: “It’s a massive game for us both on and off the pitch. Scunthorpe are a fantastic side, and it will be a great challenge. It’s great for what is the two biggest clubs at this level.”

Scunthorpe were formerly a Championship club, but after poor mismanagement and financial troubles, they now find themselves in the National League North. A change in ownership in June 2024 has added to the momentum building at the club following Peter Swann’s 10-year reign.

Danny Whitehall and Alfie Beestin have been standout performers for the North Lincolnshire club. Davies said: “It will no doubt be a tough game. Scunthorpe have some individual talent that could easily play in the EFL.”

Charlie Caton is the home side’s biggest threat. He has already surpassed his goal record last season, scoring seven in the current campaign. The attacking-midfielder could be a menace to the league leaders.

If results go their way, and Chester defeat Scunthorpe by four goals, The Seals could climb to the peak of the division. Another three points for The Iron’s could take them four points clear of the chasing pack.

Retro Day!

It’s also a special day at The Deva away from the stands! It’s Retro Day, where the fans of both clubs are encouraged to wear retro shirts in a fundraising attempt for local charities. The Joshua Tree are the beneficiaries this weekend, a charity that supports mental health of families that have suffered childhood cancer.

Davies says Retro Day is the first of many themed matchdays at Chester: “We are able to offer some things like a Retro Day competition, live music and a new retro shirt.

“We are a community club, so it is pivotal that we can showcase the incredible work charities are doing in and around the local area.”
