Southport captain Daniel Philliskirk believes his side deserved a point in their 0-0 draw with Marine last weekend but admits they can improve.

Southport hosted Marine at the Big Help stadium and it was the first time the two sides had met in league football in over 20 years.

The event was watched by a 2,464  attendance, 688 of which were Marine away fans.

Philliskirk said: “The fans have been brilliant, we’ve had decent crowds all season. Marine brought quite a few fans today and it makes it an important game and it feels like an important game now.”

Despite the importance of the fixture, the captain believes it is important to remain focussed on the game.

He said: “When you go on that pitch you don’t really see it any different, you just get on with the football game.

“We hoped to get the win for the fans and we’re disappointed we didn’t win but we will pick ourselves up. It’s a point game which is a positive and we will move forward.”

Philliskirk believes that a draw was a deserved outcome.

He said: “In the first half we were sloppy and in the second half we were a little bit better but there weren’t any real clear-cut chances, so I think 0-0 was probably a fair result.”

The yellows have failed to score in their last three games.

Philliskirk added: “In the final third we need to be more effective at times whether that is us midfielders putting it in better areas with clearances or when we are in possession of the ball. We could maybe cross the ball a little bit more with wide free-kicks or in general play.

“We can get the ball wide and put more deliveries in the box because it asks defenders questions. I think that’s something we need to improve on.”

However the captain is looking ahead and hopes his side can achieve their first win since the end of October in Saturday’s game against Peterborough Sports.

He said: “We’ve got the FA Trophy next week and we’re doing well in that. Obviously, we want to win every game so we will go into that and hope we get through.

After that we’re here against Needham Market who are obviously struggling this season but there’s no easy games in this league so we will be fully focussed on next week.”
