On Sky Sports’ Super Sunday the ex-Liverpool man stated that AFCON is not a ‘Major Tournament’.
The comments came in reflection of the Red’s star man Mohammed Salah and his chances at next years Balon D’or.

Carragher commented that he believes Salah has a lower chance at the coveted award as he does not compete in a ‘major international tournament’ like his European counterparts.
Other favourites for the award include Real Madrid trio Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vincius Junior.
Live on broadcast co-pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge were quick to counter the comment with Micah Richards stating: “AFCON is a major tournament.”
The former Liverpool star has since taken to social media to clarify his statement, saying that he believes the Egyptian is at a disadvantage in potential Balon D’or rankings as in his opinion Afcon holds less weight.
Many in the industry have said that they think the dismissal of AFCON is disrespectful and reflects wider prejudicial attitudes towards the tournament that need changing.
The CAF (Confederation of Africa Football) took to X to show their stance on the debate and have been joined by an array of African footballing greats to support the tournament.
