Despite heroics in the reverse fixture in Paris, Liverpool were unable to finish the job at Anfield, losing 4-1 on penalties after two saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Both sides remained unchanged following the first leg in Paris in which the visitors were dominated but escaped with a 1-0 victory following a late goal from Harvey Elliott.

PSG opened the scoring after a Bradley Barcola cross was not cleared from danger with Ousmane Dembele on hand to tuck away a scrappy goal in the 12th minute.

Liverpool appeared to have levelled the game in the 53rd minute with a scrappy goal before it was called offside.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off through injury in the 72nd minute, with Slot saying: “I would be surprised if he is available for Sunday.”

The home side had multiple chances to prevent extra time but were unable to capitalise, most notably Ibrahima Konate’s header hitting the inside of the post in the 79th minute.

Penalties sealed the fate of the reds with both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missing in the shootout.

Virgil Van Dijk spoke about the importance of bouncing back in their next game:

“I just want to congratulate PSG and wish them all the best.

“I think we showed a completely different Liverpool and that wasn’t difficult to be perfectly honest with you.

“This Sunday is going to be a really difficult game, I’m really looking forward to it.

“There’s some disappointment in our heads because we’re out of the competition but that’s human, we recover and fully focus on the next game.”

PSG will now be expecting to face Aston Villa in the quarter finals, with the Villans leading 3-1 on aggregate against Belgian side Club Brugge.

Despite losing, Liverpool can take solace that they have two trophies left to play for.

The reds currently sit 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand and will look to bounce back from this defeat in their Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday 16th March.
