For a football referee, receiving verbal and even physical abuse is commonplace.

But a recent BBC survey truly revealed the full extent of the problem, with two thirds of match officials saying they receive ‘regular abuse’. 

So, what makes people want to be a football referee in the first place? 

We spoke to 59-year-old Michael McGrath, a former Sunday league official in the Liverpool District leagues to find out what got him into the role, and what made him leave it.
