The title of the largest Sport England Appeal is now held by Birkenhead Park Rugby club.

A total of £74,224 became the highest figure achieved by both a rugby and non-rugby association, beating the previous record of Hull Ionians RUFC.

Urgent calls for funding was sent to local supporters from the club’s president after a loss of £100,000 due to the Covid crisis.

All donations from friends, family and former team-mates were sent through Crowdfunder attempting to hit £25,000 to renovate the club.

However, the target was reached with seven days to spare and a new stretch target of £50,000 was set by the fundraising regulator for the final week.

Following a further week extension and £10,000 additional funding, the campaign amount soared to unexpected heights.

“Extra funds come from our collaborative partnerships. We now have more than £4 million available for projects that are having an impact on their community”, Crowdfunder announced.

The local club recognised public efforts, they said: “Your incredible support and wonderful generosity has been truly amazing.”

“It has enabled us to reach a total none of us thought possible at the outset. Well done, you have been absolutely superb!”.

Re-developments are set to be above and beyond the support at Birkenhead Park.
