Liverpool fans were singing ‘Six Times’ last season, but they certainly won’t be singing it this year.
3 months into 2021, Liverpool have still not recorded a single win at Anfield. A record that stretches over seven games, including six straight home defeats in a row which is now the worst set of home losses in the club’s history.
The sixth consecutive defeat came at the hands of relegation battling Fulham, who Triumphed over the Red’s in a 1-0 victory on Sunday.
With the losses piling up, Jurgen Klopp’s team are now entering what seem like uncharted waters.
Off the back of two very successful seasons in which they broke records for all the right reasons, including a record run of 68 consecutive home league matches without defeat, the Reds are now faltering dramatically.
68 consecutive home wins almost feels like a lifetime ago and the stark contrast between now and then has never been clearer. But what exactly has been at fault?
It is difficult to understand a team who were so dominant over the league one season, could fall apart like this the next. Albeit injuries and this crazy jam-packed schedule have all paid its toll on the players this year.
However, could it be something deeper than that?
Cast your minds back to Liverpool vs Barcelona in the Champions League Semi-Final in 2019. An injury ridden Liverpool headed into the second leg 3-0 down and pulled off one of the most memorable Champions League comebacks of all time.
The same squad that step out onto the pitch now today do not cast a shade on the side that marched into a Champions League final one year, and then won the competition the next. The same squad which has overcome injury problems in the past, can’t overcome them now?
Could it down to mentality? Liverpool seem fully void of confidence, which is something you would certainly not have said about them in the past couple seasons.
Or is it more than likely that they are mentally and physically drained from performing at such a high level for such a long time, and it has all come crashing down this season.
There are a lot of questions that need to be asked, but whatever the problem is, Liverpool will have to turn it around soon if they are to have any hope of salvaging their season.
