Tranmere Rovers look set for a promotion push in League Two this season.

And boss Micky Mellon says his squad depth will be essential.

They moved up to third place after their 2-0 win over Colchester on Friday but have since dropped down a place after other results.

A successful summer from Mellon’s side has given them a strong squad to work with this season.

In fact, seven of the starting squad on Friday joined the team in the summer transfer window.

Callum McManaman, Sam Foley, Ross Doohan, Josh Hawkes, Elliot Nevitt, Tom Davies and Josh Darces-Cogley all started for Rovers in their latest win.

The squad runs far deeper than that, though.

They have already used 21 players in the league, just 11 games into the campaign.

Manager Mellon knows how important it will be to have different players contributing each week.

“We’ve got a good squad and I want them all to be involved,” Mellon told Merseysportlive.

“We’ll have different heroes every week and over the course of the season we’ll need them all.”

The community around Tranmere has always been a very strong one.

One of the goals Mellon has set out for the season relates directly to that community.

“People in the Wirral are very proud people and they love their football and their team,” Mellon added.

“It’s important that we put together a team and a group of players that can do that.

“We’re moving in the right direction, we’re going to keep the standards high.

“We’ll work hard and keep trying represent this club properly.”

The team are held in high regard at the moment with the attractive style of football that Mellon has his side playing.

“We just keep going and we know the qualities that we have in the group.

“One of them is fitness and we know how fit the group is.  It’s important that everybody’s fit in order for us to play that we want to play.”

Tranmere have been impressive with the quality of their football so far this season. However, Mellon makes sure to the keep the side thinking realistically.

“Across the whole team, they all set a new level for us,” Mellon said.

“We want to press well and run hard with the ball but there’s still a long season ahead of us.

“There won’t be any big pats on the back just yet.”
