Matt Beard’s side have had their fair share of London opposition since the season kicked off last month. Two of the three fixtures played so far were against Arsenal’s biggest rivals Chelsea and Tottenham, who they stunned 2-1 win and then lost 1-0 to respectively.

The Gunners will be travelling to Liverpool full of confidence after a historic 5-1 win away from home against European champions Lyon on Wednesday night.

LAST MEETING

The last time the two sides met was in February as they battled it out in the fifth round of The FA Cup. Liverpool were dominating the women’s championship then – a 4-0 defeat to the London side a rare loss that season.

Rhiannon Roberts scored an own goal in the 19th minute before Katie McCabe volleyed the ball home from range. Caitlin Foord and Kim Little were both also on the scoresheet.

Lydia Williams was in goal for Arsenal but having since moved on to PSG at the end of last season, all eyes will be on Manuela Zinsberger, who as of last weekend, holds the record for most consecutive WSL clean sheets.

Leanne Kiernan was Liverpool’s most dangerous player in the clash in February as she constantly got up the pitch. However, the Irish forward is still out due to injury, which has been a massive loss of firepower for Liverpool.

Arsenal, however, are not without their own injury woes. First choice centre back pairing, Leah Williamson and Rafaelle Souza are both serving time on the sidelines. Though Lotte Wubben-Moy and Steph Catley held the fort down in Lyon, Liverpool’s forwards could still find ways to exploit Arsenal’s makeshift defence.

Despite the 1-0 win against Sunderland in the Continental League Cup in early October, Liverpool will want to get the ball rolling again in the WSL. Sitting at ninth, a shock victory against second place Arsenal is not off the books. The newly promoted side did beat champions Chelsea in the season after all. They have a hill to climb though, as the raging Gunners side hope to return to the top of the table with three points.
