Liverpool Roller Birds have long championed inclusivity, challenging traditional ideas around gender and identity in sport since it was founded in 2009.
As a WFTDA-aligned league, they are the city’s first and only roller derby club, offering an accessible team sport to people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Debates around inclusion in women’s sport have intensified in recent years, particularly around the participation of transgender athletes. In 2025, the Women’s FA controversially banned transgender women from competing in women’s football at any level in England.
Against this backdrop, Liverpool Roller Birds believe their ethos highlights the growing importance of community-led sports spaces that prioritise acceptance, belonging, and participation for all. Sienna Hughes went along to one of their sessions.
