Two rival Liverpool universities will meet on Monday to battle it out for the 2023 Varsity Winners title.
Liverpool John Moores’ 2022 win secured their first triumph of the contest in 17 years after an intense 80-minute battle.
The side gained promotion to the Men’s Northern Tier Division 1A following their 2021/22 campaign, making it their most successful season to date.
The promotion also marked the first time LJMU played in a league above University of Liverpool’s first team, who were relegated to North 2A.
But UoL are determined not to accept the same result as last year and are optimistic about the Varsity game.
Club President, Sam Collins said: “Last year’s game put a real downer on our season. We really don’t want a repeat of that.
“I’m feeling confident, we want to win”.
The team finished second in the league this season behind Bangor University 1sts.
First team Captain, Matt Rabbette said: “It’s going to be a tough game, but we’ll be up for it.”
After a rocky first season in the North 1A, LJMU finished bottom of their table but will be erasing all defeats from their mind as they take on UoL in hopes of claiming the win for a second year.
Reflecting on their achievement sand looking ahead, first team captain Luke Pearson said: “I’m feeling confident and feeling ready.
“We are aiming to do the same as last year but with more flare and execution.
“We want to separate the gap and show that we’re the better team.”
Teammate Lawrence Kehoe added: “This is the pinnacle of the year, it’s the biggest game we look forward to.”
The Battle of the Blues will take place on Monday March 13 at 7pm at Sefton RUFC.
